Wrong Way ELT

ELT Install wrong

Recently we were performing a large upgrade to an older C172. The installing technician came to me and said "grab the camera, we have one for the web site".

The aircraft came to us with the ELT installed as pictured above. The ELT was installed on the right side aft baggage compartment wall. The installation looked routine until you examined it closely (pictured below)

Backwards ELT

The ELT had been mounted facing the wrong way. These ELT have a rather basic G-switch which consists of a weighed bar that hangs down and pushes the toggle switch to the "ON" position when a forward impact occurs. Mounted the wrong way, the unit will never activate in a crash.

The logbook showed the unit was installed back in the 1980's and it's battery had been serviced regularly since then. Part of the Penn Avionics upgrade was the removal of this ELT and a installation of a new 406 MHZ unit.
