When I first saw the price of the Skywatch system a few years ago, I
thought we would never sell one to a GA customer. I had not flown with the
system, and as much as I wanted to avoid a mid-air I thought the Skywatch would
not appeal to the piston engine crowd. Since then we have seen more and more
GA customers installing these systems. I have had a chance to put about 100
hrs behind a Skywatch and I will honestly say I now feel uncomfortable flying
without one. All it takes is a sunny Saturday or Sunday in the Philadelphia
area to convince you there are
many many more targets out there
(within 6 miles of your aircraft) that you never see visually. On almost every
flight the Skywatch points out some close by target that I never saw. I know
statistically there are not that many mid-air collisions occurring, but all it takes is
one. Penn Avionics can arrange a demonstration flight for customers interested
in the Skywatch system.
Skywatch installed from $16362.00
The left picture is the normal MFD screen (on a 5.0 nm scale) showing an
aircraft at your 3:00 position, 200 feet below you about 1.5 miles out. The
right screen is the warning screen (the traffic may become a collision
threat). The target has turned yellow, and you will get a verbal call out in
your headset of traffic. The lower in flight picture is the traffic passing
off your right wing.
